Bruceville, TX was named for this man. He was the son of George W. and Harriet (Faucett) Bruce. He attended Professor Prout's private school for boys and learned the printing trade by working for the Greensboro Patriot for 3 years. In 1856 he began to study medicine under Dr. W.T. Bailey at Memphis, TN, then entered the Medical College of St. Louis, graduating in 1862. He returned to Memphis where he practiced medicine until 1867 when he moved to Mastersville in McLennan County, TX. After engaging in the medical profession for a short time he began to invest in land, acquiring 600 acres in McLennan and Falls counties. The construction of the station for the MKT railroad, built on Dr. Bruce's land, in 1881 resulted in the founding of Bruceville when the residents of Mastersville moved to the new railroad site. Bruce served at Representative from McLennan County in the TX legislature during the 1879-1880 session.
On Mar. 4, 1857, he married Dora P. Rutherford of Memphis. They were the parents of 5 children.
