Charles Mereness WWII Vet

Charles C. Mereness, 62, of 3243 McManus St., Los Angeles, Calif., died Saturday afternoon at the Veterans Administration Wadsworth Hospital there following a long illness. He was born April 5, 1919, in Canajoharie, the son of Glenn and Esther Dingman Mereness. He was married to the former Eva Miller Feb. 21, 1941 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Fort Plain. Mr. Mereness was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre as a medic with the 315th Medical Group. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was employed by the former Beech-Nut Life Savers until leaving the area in 1963 and later by Monogran Industries in Culver City, Calif. He retired because of ill health in 1974. He was of the Lutheran faith and a member of the Culver City Moose Lodge No. 1612 of which he had been a trustee for many years. Survivors include his widow; a daughter, Mrs. Jeannette Shelter,, Ewa Beach, Hawaii; two sons. Lawrence Mereness, Mission Hills, Calif., and DeWayne Mereness, Fort Plain; a brother, Glenn Mereness. Little Falls; eight grandchildren: several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services held at 11 pm at the Gray Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Dingman. pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will be made in the Fort Plain Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home are 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday.
