John Timothy Pigford was the son of Timothy Samuel Pigford and Olive R. Pierce.
He was born in a section of Lauderdale County, MS known as Mt.Gilead, a few miles sw of Toomsuba and was the first born of 10 children.
He served in the Army of the Confederate State of America in 1st Mississippi State Troops.

He married Martha Julia (Mattie) Shannon on 25 March 1869 in Lauderdale County, MS.
They had 14 children.

He applied for and was awarded a Confederate Pension.
