On October 12, 1949, Eugenie Moore Anderson was appointed U.S. ambassador to Denmark. Anderson was the first woman to hold this position. She helped draft a Treaty of Commerce and Friendship with Denmark, and then became the first American women to sign a treaty. In 1962, Anderson was appointed to Bulgaria. In this position she became the first female chief of a US diplomatic mission behind the Iron Curtain. In 1965, Anderson became the first woman to sit on the United Nations Security Council.
