Rev. Neill Johnson was baptized in the Barbecue Pesbyterian Church in North Carolina. Minister and missionary of the Cumberland Presbyterian church, he studied at Cumberland College and was licensed to preach in 1826. After having been a circuit rider, probate judge, and school master in Mississippi Valley states, he came overland with his family in 1851 via the Barlow Road. The family were stranded in the cascade Mts. until help arrived. They located at the edge of French Prairie in a community Johnson named Belpassi (or Belle Passe) meaning "Beautiful Place," near what is now Woodburn. He became prominent in the work of his church. In 1863 he moved his family to Auburn in eastern Oregon, where, to supplement his living as a preacher, he mind and operated a dairy and poultry farm, serving as county judge of Baker County in 1864. He resumed his work in Willamette Valley in 1866, settling in McMinnville where he spent the rest of his life. His wife was Esther Roelofson, whom he married in 1828. They had 10 children.
