Thomas E. "Gene" Byington, 72, of Church Hill, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, evening (July 26, 2009) at Indian Path Medical Center in Kingsport after an extended illness.
He was born in Surgoinsville and had been a resident of Church Hill for the past 49 years. Mr. Byington served in the U.S. Navy. Gene was a former over the road truck driver with Mason Dixon and retired as a truck driver with Yellow Freight Systems. He was a member of the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church and attended Indian Ridge Baptist Church when he was able.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas "Bud" and Maggie McLain Byington; three sisters, Mary Dye, Janice Dye and Gladys Jones and a nephew, Billy Byington.
Survivors include his loving wife of 49 years, Georgia Sexton Byington of the home; three sons, Douglas L. Byington and wife Patricia of Church Hill, Thomas "Andy" Byington and wife Sandra of Valrico, Florida and Travis Shane Byington and wife Jennifer of Kingsport; six grandchildren, Josh, Isabella, Noah, Julianna, Abigail and Aiden; three sisters, Creeda Vullo and husband Larry of Deland, Florida; Wanda Moon and husband Ray of Deland, Florida and Dorothy Roberson of North Fairfield, Ohio; two brothers, Harlan Byington and wife Earlene of Lebanon, Tennessee and Conner Byington and wife Evelyn of Oak Harbor, Ohio along with several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2009 at the Carter-Trent Funeral Home of Church Hill, 1115 Highway 11W, Church Hill, or friends may visit anytime at the residence. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel at 2 p.m. with Rev. Kyle Falin and Rev. Ron Grimes, officiating. Graveside services will follow in Church Hill Memory Gardens, Church Hill.
