Hugh Henry was the son of Alexander and Jean Robertson Henry. Jean's brother, Nicholas Robertson, was the grandfather of General James Robertson, the leader of the Regulator Movement in North Carolina. In 1770, after the collapse of the Regulator Movement, sympathizers from that colony under James Robertson fled and established homes farther west on the Watauga River, effectively beyond the reach of the colonial authorities. Hugh Henry was with his cousin, James Robertson, in Watauga and in 1779 they led a settlement party to the banks of the Cumberland River in the Nashville Basin and founded Fort Nashborough, which later became Nashville.
