George W. Spencer, 88, Topeka, formerly of Harveyville, Kansas, passed away Friday, April 22, 2011, at Midland Hospice House, Topeka, Kansas. He was born June 22, 1922, at Harveyville, Kansas, the son of Delbert Warren and Lela Maude Rothert Spencer.

He graduated from Harveyville High School in 1940. He served as a Captain in the United States Army in Italy during WW II where he was a Platoon and Company Commander in the 337th Infantry and was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Silver Star. He graduated from Emporia State University, Emporia, Kansas, following his military service. George was Postmaster at Harveyville, and later a rural mail carrier until he retired.

He was a member of the Harveyville United Methodist Church, and church treasurer. He served as a Wabaunsee County Commissioner and was a member of the Harveyville School Board, and later Mission Valley USD # 330 school board. He was a member of the Lions Club and the Russell Fouts American Legion Post No. 209, Harveyville, and was Sexton of Harveyville Cemetery for many years. George volunteered at Stormont-Vail Hospital for several years after moving to Topeka.

He married Virginia Akers, September 3, 1942, at Topeka, Kansas. She survives at the home.

Other survivors include two daughters, Vicky (Joe) Schartz, Dalhart, TX, and Karolyn (Royce) Fulmer, Topeka, KS; a sister, Bethel Logan, Topeka, KS; a brother, Dwight Spencer, Emporia, KS; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Cremation is planned Graveside inurnment services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2011, in Harveyville Cemetery, Harveyville, where Military Graveside Services will be provided by a US Army Honor Detail. Memorial contributions may be made to the Harveyville United Methodist Church or Midland Care Hospice, and sent c/o Carey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 196, Burlingame, KS 66413.
