Lionel Gough Arbuthnot was the son of Hugh Gough Arbuthnot (grandson of Sir William Arbuthnot, 1st Baronet and Caroline Molyneux.
He married, firstly, Violet Rebecca Morris, daughter of Sir John Henry Morris, on 18 April 1894.
He and Violet Rebecca Morris were divorced in 1913.
He married, secondly, Ada Ellen Brunker, daughter of Lt.-Col. H. M. G. Brunker, on 9 June 1927.
He died aged 74.
