Elizabeth Augusta Howe was born Aug.22,1847 in Brandon,Vermont.Elizabeth was named after her paternal grandmother,Elizabeth Spears Howe and her maternal grandmother,Elizabeth Murray Soper Kelsey,Elizabeth's middle name was taken from her grand uncle,Augustus Burt (1738-1870),a son her Great-Grandmother,Ruth Warner Howe(1781-1814)had with her second husband,Captain Joseph Burt.Elizabeth's sister,Gratia Burt Howe,took her name from her grand aunt,Gratia Burt(1786-1880),a sibling of above mentioned Augustus Burt.

On April 30,1832 her father, Nehemiah Howe ,born Nov 30,1800 in Littleton,New Hampshire.,son of, Salah Howe (1762-1841) and Elizabeth Spears (1773-1846) married Pasiphae Jane Kelsey,born Sep 1,1807 in Saisbury,Vermont.Pasiphae was the daughter of Gamaliel Kelsey (1785-1844)and Elizabeth Murray Soper (1787-1880).After their marriage Nehemiah and Pasiphae went to live a short time in Plattsburg,New York where their first son George Gamaliel Howe was born.They then moved to Avon,New York where the next three of their children were born.(see below)By 1845 they were back in Vermont living first in Brandon,Vermont where their youngest daughter,Elizabeth Augusta Howe and subject of this biograpy was bornn 1847.Soon after her birth the family moved to Middlebury,Vermont.

Their five children in order of birth were as follows..

1- George Gamaliel Howe : b Jan 30,1833 in Plattsburg,N.Y,married Lorette Walcott Feb 20,1866,He served in the Civil War,as a Captain of Company I, Vermont 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment,he was a "Harness Maker".

2-Gratia Burt Howe: b Dec 4, 1838,in Avon,N.Y.,d Mar 30,1909 in Middlebury,Vt,helped raise her brother George's only child,Edith.Gratia never marries.

3-Ansel Wallace Howe : b Oct 9,1840 in Avon,N.Y.,d Feb.1,1888 in Hanover,N.H.He married, Alice Daulton on Nov 5,1874 in Lowell,Ma.Like his brother,George,Ansel was a "Harness Maker",d Feb 1,1888 in Hanover,New Hampshire

4-Eugene Howe: b Aug 28,1843 in Avon,N.Y.,severely insured in the Civil War he moved to the Nations Capital where he worked before retiring to a disabled home for veterans in Hampton City,Virginia where he died Mar 1,1892 at the age of 48.

5-Elizabeth Augusta Howe b Aug 22,1847 in Brandon,Vt,d Dec 12,1901 in Newark,New Jersey.

Long before Vermont was a state, Elizabeth's family were early pioneers settlers of the Vermont frontier.On Oct 11,1745 her 3rd great Grandfather, Nehemiah Howe (1693-1747)was captured by Indian's on the Great meadow of Hinsdale,Vermont and taken to a French Canadian prison where he died.While in prison he recorded his ordeal,detailing his captivity,in a journal which was published in 1747 and titled "A Narrative of the Captivity of Nehemiah How".Elizabeth's paternal grand father,Corporal Salah Howe (1762-1841), was a patriot soldier in the Revolutionary War for New Hampshire.In 1776,at the age of 14,Salah joined Capt John Dennett's 2nd New Hampshire Battalion,commanded by Col.George Reid and served thougout the war.

At the age or 28,Elizabeth Augusta Howe,who had become a music teacher,married, William Harley Sanderson on Feb 2,1876 at the home of her parents on Court Street in Middlebury,Vermont.Her husband was a Brandon,Vermont native and Civil War Veteran.After the war,William began his civilian working career with The Howe Scale Company in Brandon,Vermont.He started his employ there as a "Sealer" on Aug 28,1865.They remained in Brandon until after the birth of thier daughter,Frances Elizabeth on May 16, 1877.Soon after her birth,William transferred to the Howe Scale Companies Rutland,Vermont factory.Thier second child,Charles Winfred Sanderson was born in Rutland,Vermont on July 16,1879.

2-Charles Winfred Sanderson b Jul 16,1879 in Rutland,Vermont,d Dec 31,1949 in Miami,Florida.

In March of 1889, Elizabeth,William and the children moved to Detorit,Mi where he began work as a "Foreman" at "The Computing Scale Line" Soon after this company became "The Computing Scale Company " of Dayton,Ohio to which place they relocated.The Sanderson's lived in Ohio during the "Industrial Revolution" an exciting time in our nations history.During this period the cities of Cleveland and Dayton played a vital role in producing many innovations and inventions.Dayton was known as "The City with a Thousand Factories".William remained with the "The Computing Scale Company" until 1894 when he left them to engage in employment with "The Fairbanks Scale Company" in Pittsburgh,Pa.William remained in Pittsburgh until March of 1897 when he began work with "The National Computing Scale Company" of Cleveland,Ohio.In the fall of 1900, William Harley and Elizabeth moved to Newark,New Jersey where,William started work for,"The Wilmore Computing Scale Company" there.

While living in Newark ,Elizabeth loses her three year battle with stomach cancer and passes away on Dec 12,1901.Her remains were taken Saturday Dec 14,1901 to Brandon,Vermont, accompanied by her husband,William Harley Sanderson their children,Frances Elizabeth Sanderson and Charles Winfred Sanderson along with William's,brother,Charles Wesley Sanderson of Boston.Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock at Brandon's Congregational Church Sunday Dec 15.Officiating the service was Rev W. S. Smart,burial was in the Sanderson family plot at Pine Hill Cemetery.

After Elizabeth's death her husband ,William remained in Newark until late May of 1902 where he returned to his former employer at "The Computing Scale Company" of Dayton,Ohio.Here,William's position was "Mechanical Supervisor",taking charge of the experimental Department of said company.While here,William invented an improvement to a "Platform Scale" which not only weighed an article but recorded it's value as well.His invention was PATENTED on July 3, 1906.William remained in this capacity here until the Spring of 1910 when he was forced to retire because of illness.

William Harley Sanderson married his third wife,Flora E. Rawson in 1905 and moved to,712 N Salem Ave in Dayton Ohio which was several city blocks away from where the Wright Brothers lived on 7 Hawthorn Street.On June 17th and 18th of 1909 in Dayton,Ohio the Wright brothers were honored with two days of celebration for their invention of flight.The whole city of Dayton came out to honer their home town heroes.Dayton's schools and factories closed for the occasion so that people could attend the parades,public reception,fireworks display and awards ceremony.Since, William was employed with "The Computing Scale Companies" factory in Dayton during this event,it is highly likely that,William was among those who participated in the two days of celebration for the Wright Brothers.

Elizabeth's Augusta Howe's husband,William Harley Sanderson dies in Dayton,Ohio on Dec 4,1911,his remains were taken to Pine Hill Cemetery in Brandon,Vermont to be buried next to her and William's parents,David Sanderson and Lucy Elwell.
