An extenstion cord connected to a space heater may have been the cause of a fire that caused the deaths of Bryce Schendel, 26, Ayden Best, 5, Jace D. Best, 4, and Zoey S. Schendel, born just five months ago.

The childrens' mother, Ashley Schendel and 10 yr old sister, Alexis Best were able to escape. They were taken to the hospital.

Ayden Loree Best, age 5 years, of Richmond, Kansas, died Monday, April 25, 2011. She was born on Monday, November 21, 2005, in Olathe, Kansas. She was the daughter of Jeremiah Dean Best and Ashley Loree (Kirkland) Schendel.

She lived in Rantoul, Waverly, and Richmond, Kansas.

Ayden was a pre-school student at Central Heights School in Richmond, Kansas.

Ayden's interests were ATV's, swimming, and playing with her brothers and sisters.

Ayden is survived by her: Mother-Ashley Loree Schendel of Richmond, Kansas; Father-Jeremiah Dean Best and his wife, Jessica, of Ottawa, Kansas; Sister-Alexis Kaye Best of Richmond, Kansas; Brother-Jadan Dean Best of Ottawa, Kansas; Grandparents-Carrie Romine and Todd Howell of Ashland, Kentucky; James and Donna Best of Waverly, Kansas; Jay and Terri Schendel of Wellsville, Kansas; Katie and Leroy Kirkland of Rantoul, Kansas; David and Marli Brown (Yeo) of Overland Park, Kansas; Loretta Brown of Peculiar, Missouri; Aunts & Uncles-Derek Best of Waverly; Nicholas and Sandra Best of Lane, Kansas; Ethan Best of Waverly, Kansas; Steven Brown of Overland Park, Kansas; Hannah Kirkland of Rantoul, Kansas; Roy Kirkland serving in the Military; Tony Kirkland of Rantoul, Kansas; Alissa Best and Dusty Caswell of Waverly, Kansas.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, May 2, 2011, at Ottawa University Chapel, 1001 S. Cedar, in Ottawa, with burial at Richmond Cemetery in Richmond, Kansas. Family will meet with friends from 3:00 to 5:00 Sunday afternoon at Ottawa University Chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions to Schendel-Best Memorial Fund, c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 235 S. Hickory, Ottawa, Kansas 66067.
