Daniel was born in Ireland, the son of William Harney and Catherine (Foley) Harney. His father died during immigration to this country, traveling from New Orleans to St. Louis, Missouri.
Daniel married first to Gillian German/Gorman, who died in childbirth of their son William in 1858. Daniel married second to Bridget McGrath who was also from County Tipperary, Ireland.
