Enlisted in the U.S. Army in early 1918, but was sent to Fort Root for emergency surgeries, and was sent home by the military to Shreveport in September 1918, dying at home one month later. He had previously been a Shreveport fireman. First interred in the family cemetery in the Gladstone community (present-day South Highlands) and re-interred on May 31, 1921, in the family's newly purchased plot in Forest Park Cemetery.
