Chief Bernard Ellis Dennard, Sr., passed away peacefully January 8, surrounded by his loving family. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, January 13 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Perry with Dr. Tracy Brinson officiating. Interment will follow in Perry Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 6 - 8 p.m. Wednesday at Watson - Hunt Funeral Home. The family suggests contributions to Second Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund where he was a member for years.
The son of John and Maggie Dennard, B.E. was born on October 16, 1922, in Wilcox County, Georgia. His parents, along with his sister Shirley Hunt and his brothers, Henry, Otis, Van, Rawlins, James, and J.C. Dennard, preceded him in death. B.E., or "Chief" as he was still called, was drafted into the United States Army and served his country with honor during WWII. He returned from the war to continue his life of service as a police officer in Vienna, GA. In 1953 he moved to Perry where he worked at the Perry Police Department. He was appointed Chief of Police in 1964 and continued to honorably serve his community until his retirement in 1988. He was a lifetime member of the Georgia Peace Officer's Association and Chiefs of Police Organization.
Chief was also a member of the Perry VFW Post.
B.E. is survived by his loving wife, of 38 years, Ruth Parker Dennard; sons, Bernard Ellis Dennard, Jr. (Jeannie), Harry Dennard (Mickie), David Dennard (Bebe), Rodney Lockerman (Gayle), and Keith Lockerman (Connie). He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
