She was born Nov. 8, 1922, in Lewisburg, the daughter of the late Roy L. and Miriam A. (Bressler) Royer.
Helen graduated from Lewisburg High School, received her bachelor of arts and master's degrees from Bucknell University and was the first woman to receive a Ph.D. in history from Pennsylvania State University.
Helen taught early American history at Stratford Junior College, Bucknell University and Penn State and retired from Montclair State University in New Jersey.
Helen traveled widely on five continents and in more than 40 countries studying comparative civilizations. She was a member of various national, state and local historical societies. Upon retirement, she returned to Lewisburg, where she was president of the Buffalo Valley AARP, treasurer of the Lewisburg Civic Club, served as a "good cheer" lady at RiverWoods and was on the RiverWoods Auxiliary Executive Board. She volunteered as a guide at the Slifer House Museum, where she also served on the advisory board.
Helen was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Lewisburg, where she served on the administrative council, taught Sunday school and was church historian.
She is survived by one sister-in-law, Suzanne Royer, and two nephews, Joseph and David Royer, all of Colorado, and one cousin, the Rev. Robert Van Lew, of Tennessee.
She was predeceased by one brother, Ellsworth Royer.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family with Helen's cousin conducting a graveside service in Lewisburg Cemetery.
