My grandmother didn't think there was any sorrow that could befall you that a good, hot, home-cooked meal couldn't cure. For years, she hid plastic Easter eggs in and among the plants in her perennial border for her grandchildren to hunt and find. Her camellia and hydrangeas were my favorites.

She always made sure her granddaughters' Barbie dolls were fashionably dressed, and in rotation by order of birth, handpieced and quilted each of her thirteen grandchildren at least one quilt.

She was a life-long Southern Baptist, tee-totaler, and always got her mother's lace tablecloth off the dining room table in a flash when my grandfather, their son and sons-in-law broke out the playing cards and poker chips after the noon meal.

Her obituary:

Mrs. Louise Herrington Burris, aged 71 of Arkadelphia, widow of George W. Burris, Jr., died Friday in St. Vincent's hospital. A native of Clark County, she was a daughter of the late Jasper M and Julia Ann McBrayer Herrington. She was a retired nurse, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Arkadelphia where she was president of the TEL Sunday School class, and president of Fran's Fans.

Survivors include one son, William F (Bill) Burris of Atkins; three daughters, Mrs. Mary Ann Rutherford of Bryant, Mrs. Jean Lensing of Little Rock, and Mrs. Wanda Newmann of Atkins; two brothers, Charlie McBrayer of Cooper, Tex., and John McBrayer of Little Rock; five sisters, Mrs. Bernice Stephens and Mrs. Eunice Granite of Madera, Calif., Mrs. Inez Horne of Malvern, Mrs. Florence Evans of Laguna Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Verna Feimster of Arkadelphia; thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Murry-Ruggles Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Nolan Porter and Rev. Homer Haltom officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were the TEL Class and Fran's Fans at the First Baptist Church.

Active pallbearers were Bobby Herrington, Col. (ret.), Ned Bethea, Jack Herrington, Houston Haltom and Bobby Burris.
