US Congressman, US Senator, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. Elected to represent New Mexico as an At-Large Delegate in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1941 until 1945, when he resigned to accept the appointment of Secretary of Agriculture in the first Truman Administration. He served in that office from 1945 until 1948. He was then elected as a Senator from New Mexico to the United States Senate, serving from 1949 to 1973.
