She was born June 3, 1928, in Eveleth to John and Frances (Baron) Smolke. Leona graduated from Eveleth High School and was married to John V. Novelan on July 21, 1951, at the former Holy Family Catholic Church in Eveleth. She had worked at Cluett-Peabody Shirt Factory and J.C. Penney in Eveleth and Virginia, retiring in 1990 from the catalog department. Leona was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church, Auxiliary to Mesaba Range Post 1172 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Z.A.S. Lodge #1, Fayal Golden Club, Eveleth Senior Citizens and Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court St. Margaret #1888 of Eveleth. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, going to the casino, traveling and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her sons, John (Paula) and Barry; two granddaughters, Laura and Leah; sister, Margaret Wolff; and numerous nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John on March 27, 1978; brothers, Arthur, Joseph, Edward, Richard and Raymond; sisters, Ann Paro, Mary Helman and Rose Omersa; and her parents.
Interment will be in Eveleth Cemetery.
