Born in Irwin Township, the son of Johann Philip Jr. and Christena Jane Walter Porter Ghost (the name was later changed to Coast) and the brother of Peter Walter and Carlisle Cross Coast. He married Catherine Elizabeth Surrena and was the father of Albert Orville, Carlisle Orrin, Philip Hulbert, William Surrena, Emma Ina (Nutt), and John Elmer Coast.
