NORTH CLARENDON - Leland Smith Congdon, 90, died April 22, 2011, at Rutland Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born Aug. 28, 1920, in Clarendon, the son of Hugh Horace and Julia (Johnson) Congdon.

He graduated from Rutland High School in 1938 and Morrisville Agricultural College in 1940, Beta Theta Gamma Fraternity.

Mr. Congdon was a self-employed dairy farmer for 30 years, followed by 25 years as a milk tester for the Vermont State Dairy Herd Improvement Association. He was a life member of Rutland County Agricultural Society.

He was a Clarendon selectman, a justice of the peace, served on the Board of Civil Authority, and for his public service, received a Community Citizen Award in 1981 from Clarendon Grange, a Vermont Public Service Award in 1999 and a plaque of appreciation from the town in 2006.

He served on Clarendon Town School Board, including as chairman, on Mill River Union High School Board and as treasurer of Rutland South Supervisory Union. Clarendon Elementary School established the Leland Congdon Award, given each year to a sixth-grade student who has demonstrated outstanding community service, and he received the Vermont Principals Association Award for being a distinguished friend of education in 1999.

Mr. Congdon was a deacon at Old Brick Church where he received an award of appreciation in 1992.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Gladys Elizabeth (McKinney) Congdon, two sons, Edwin and Leland Congdon Jr., and a brother, Edward Congdon, all of Clarendon; three daughters, Joan Congdon of Indianola, Pa., Janet Keefe of Chippenhook and Julie Congdon of Rutland; a sister, Helen Durfee of Rutland; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Ella Purple, on April 11, and an infant brother.

The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at the Tossing Funeral Home where friends may call from 1 p.m. prior to the service.

Burial will be in East Clarendon Cemetery.
