United States Marine Corps Lieutenant General. He graduated from Ohio State University in 1917, joined the Marine Corps and was certified as a bomber pilot. During World War I, he was awarded the Navy Cross for flying bombing missions. He also was credited with pioneering advanced innovations in Navy and Marine Corps aviation in instrument flying and radio navigation. After the war he was a pilot for American Airlines when recalled to active duty in World War II. Assigned to Admiral William E. Halsey's staff, he later became base commander of Peleliu Island in the Pacific and West Carolines. Returning to American Airlines after the war, he was director of flight dispatch, remained in the Marine Corps Reserves and was a of the US Reserve Forces Policy Board. He retired from the Marine Corps Reserves a Lieutenant General in 1957.
