Theorist, painter, photographer and teacher who founded the New Bauhaus and Institute of Design in Chicago. Fled Nazi Germany in 1934 and settled in Chicago in 1937 with the help of industrialist patrons. Pioneered the creation of "photograms" contemporaneously with Christian Schad and Man Ray. He was one of the most influential figures in 20th century American photography.
