The marker is clearly relatively recent and gets the Civil War side wrong (the picture shows a Union uniform), and I believe they used his wife's death date as he shows up in the 1900 US Federal Census living with his son with the right age and widowed.

My mother (his great-great-grandaughter) said his middle name was McDonald, though I haven't found any evidence of that.
