The date and place of birth of the immigrant Edmund Greenleaf and the identities of his parents are not known. Given that his first wife Sarah Moore was baptized in 1588, it is possible that he was born sometime between 1585-1590.

The date of birth 02 Jan 1574 on his tombstone, which was also his published date of baptism in Genealogy of the Greenleaf Family by James Edward Greenleaf (1896), is actually the date 02 Jan 1574/5 of baptism of Thomas Greenleaf, son of John and Margaret Greenleaf (second photo attachment). John and Margaret had four known children named Thomas, William, Helen and Elizabeth baptized from 02 Jan 1574/5 to 19 Mar 1580/1 at St. Mary of the Tower in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. If Edmund Greenleaf was a son of John and Margaret Greenleaf of Ipswich, then his baptismal record is missing, which is not uncommon.

Though the immigrant Edmund Greenleaf had in his possession a cane with a silver handle bearing the initials "J. G.", which could be the initials of his father, there are other men named John Greenleaf besides the one in Ipswich, Suffolk who could have been his father, and so far there is no proof to verify any of them. Boyds Marriage Index reveals a marriage of John Greenleaf and Rosamund Gleed in 1575 at Ardleigh, Essex. Given that the immigrant Edmund Greenleaf married his first wife Sarah Moore at Langford, Essex before relocating to Ipswich, John and Rosamund could be his parents.

Another John Greenleaf was baptizing children at Lavenham, Suffolk from 1581-1594, including sons named John, Thomas, Paul and Isaac, but again no son named Edmund was found (see map in third photo attachment).

Edmund Greenleaf had two wives: his first wife was Sarah Moore, who he married at Langford, Essex, England on 02 Jul 1611 and was the mother of all of his children, and his second wife was widow Sarah (Jurdaine) Hill, who he married in Boston sometime after the death of first wife Sarah (Moore) Greenleaf on 18 Jan 1662/3. William Hill, the first husband of Sarah Jurdaine, had married her in Exeter, Devonshire, England on 28 Oct 1619 and had died in 1649 after they had come to America.
