Springfield (Mo.) Leader-Press
24 Sep. 1956,
Attribute Death To Suffocation

Suffocation was said by Coroner Dr. C. A. Chickering of Hutchinson, Kan., to be the apparent cause of death of John J. Gatewood, 45, of 923 Roanoke, in a Hutchison motel yesterday.

Gatewood, a salesman for the Chicago wholesale florist and a resident of Springfield for three years, was a World War II veteran.

Dr. Chickering said a fire in the motel room apparently had been caused by a cigarette dropped on a bed. Furniture in the room was ablaze when discovered about noon.

Galtewood's body was found unburned and seated in a chair at the desk in his room. He had checked into the motel Saturday and had called his wife from there about 8 p.m.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine, a son, Robert, and a daughter, Betty Catherine, all of Springfield.

Coroner Chickering said there would be no inquest. The body has been returned to the Herman-Lohmeyer Funeral Home here.
