Etta Davis was one of six children born to Joseph Henry and Sarah Frances Hatfield. In 1900 the family was living on Davis Street in Zanesville, Father Arthur was employed as a day laborer and Etta was working as a tile shader.

Leonard and Etta Elizabeth Davis were married August 12, 1903 in Muskingum County. They were the parents of five children, a boy who died in infancy and daughters, Alice Catherine, Edna May, Grace Naomi and Anna Louise. They also raised a granddaughter, Eleanore Jean following the death of her mother Alice.

Leonard and Etta took up permanent residence on Monroe Street. Leonard worked as a blacksmith at a tubeworks and later as a machinist and as a hostler (person who moves railroad cars) for the railroad. Etta kept house. The Millers were members of St Nicholas Catholic Church.
