Etta Davis was one of six children born to Joseph Henry and Sarah Frances Hatfield. In 1900 the family was living on Davis Street in Zanesville, Father Arthur was employed as a day laborer and Etta was working as a tile shader.

They were the parents of five children, a boy who died in infancy and daughters, Alice Catherine, Edna May, Grace Naomi and Anna Louise. They also raised a granddaughter, Eleanore Jean following the death of her mother Alice.
