Per the 1860 federal census, he still lived in Zanesville with his father Robert and step-mother, Margaret Moore Miles. His mother, Rebecca died in 1854. He had siblings; James, John, Emma and Sarah and a half-sister, Delilah. Between 1862 and 1867, his step-mother had four more children. His additional half-siblings were Anna, Frank, Frederick and Henry.
On April 23, 1868, at 22 years old, he married 18 year old, New York born, Anna Scanlon in Zanesville, Ohio. They remained in Zanesville, and had nine children; Nellie, James, William, John, Joseph Jr., Edward, Elizabeth and Margaret. On June 9, 1888, Anna died giving birth to the ninth child, a son. The son died as well. Joseph had 7 children living at home, 3 to 21 years.
Two years after Anna's death, Joseph remarried. He wed 34 year old, Emma H. Gebhart. She had no children of her own and their union did not produce any additional children. (However, in Emma's 1936 obituary, his children are noted as being her children also. There was no step-child distinction.)
By the 1910 federal census they had moved to Washington, Muskingum County, Ohio on Adamsville Road. He worked at odd jobs and they lived in a house that they owned free of a mortgage. Joseph Jr. and his family live nearby.
He died on September 13, 1917 and was buried at Greenwood Cemetery.
