US Congressman. He served in the United States House of Representatives from the 3rd District of Wisconsin from March 4, 1907 to March 4, 1909. He graduated from the State normal school in Platteville, Wisconsin in 1873 and taught school in both Grant and Lafayette counties in the state for five years. He later studied law and was admitted to the state bar in 1879. He went on to attend the University of Michigan and earned his law degree from there in 1880. After graduating, he began a private law practice in Platteville, Wisconsin. He later served as district attorney for Grant County, Wisconsin from 1887 to 1891. From 1904 to 1906, he served as the mayor of his hometown of Platteville. During this time, he also was active in the promotion of zinc mining in the Platteville area and was the head of the Enterprise Mining company of Platteville, In 1906, he ran, as a Democrat, against seven-term incumbent Republican Joseph W. Babcock for a seat in the United States House of Representatives and was successful in the November general election. He served one term before losing his re-election to Republican Arthur W. Kopp in 1908. After leaving office, he resumed his private law practice. He made an unsuccessful run for a seat in Congress in 1920.
