John Martin (did he go by Martin?) Bruner (his obituary lists his surname as Brunner) was the youngest of seven known children of Johann (went by John) Martin Brunner (1782-1873) and Anna Catharina Rominger Brunner (1781-1851), who married 03 Nov 1807 (bond date) at Broadbay Township, Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. The family moved to the Moravian community of Hope, Bartholomew County, Indiana in 1834.

John was raised in the vicinity of Hope and was a life-long farmer in the area. John first married to his distant cousin, Amelia Swaim (1830-1864) on 09 Nov 1852 at Hope, Bartholomew County, Indiana. John and Amelia were the parents of seven (or six?) known children:

1. Mary Catherine Bruner Smiley Rome (1853-1933)
2. Anna O. Bruner (1854-1864)
3. Elizabeth Bruner Specht (1858-1898)
4. Calvin T. Bruner (1859-a1870)
5. John S. Bruner (1862-1899)
6. Edelia Bruner (c1863-???)
7. Edward Charles (or Charles Edward?) Bruner (1864-1937)

Edelia and Edward may be the same child. After Amelia died, John remarried to the widow Mrs. Philipina (went by Phoebe or Phebe) Eliza Gambold Burcham (1837-1907) on 16 Sep 1866 at Hope, Bartholomew County, Indiana. Phoebe was first married to Augustus Burcham, with whom she had two children. John and Phoebe were the parents of five known children, namely:

8. William Nile Bruner (1867-1954)
9. Convey E. Bruner (1868-1886)
10. Henry E. Bruner (1870-1950)
11. Frederick W. Bruner (1872-1950)
12. Laura Mae Bruner Matson (1877-1950)
