Helen Lawson Gillenwater Quillin departed this life for her Heavenly home on Monday, August 3, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on December 21, 1931, she was the daughter of the late James Ezra and Ollie Hill Lawson.

She was a member of Lawson Memorial Church where her husband was Pastor for many years.

She worked as a cook at Rikemo Lodge for several years and then at Holston Valley Community Hospital until her retirement.

She was a lifelong resident of the Fort Blackmore area of Scott County, VA.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, and the father of her children, Sidney Gillenwater in September of 1969 and one sister, Edith Blevins, two brothers, Howard Lawson and Bill Lawson.

Surviving is her husband, Herman C. Quillin, Ft. Blackmore, VA; son, Sidney Don Gillenwater and wife, Debbie, Ft. Blackmore, VA; daughters, Aretta Hill and husband, Larry, Mt. Carmel, TN and Donna Brickey and husband, Steve, Ft. Blackmore, VA; five grandchildren, Chris and Matt Hill, Aaron Gillenwater, Julia Williams and husband, David, Tina Anderson and husband, Tony; nine great grandchildren, Lauren, Victoria, Kaitlyn, and Isaac Williams, Diane, Toni, and Madison Anderson, Dayton and Addison Hill; sisters, Ina Lawson and husband, Lucian Lawson, Ft. Blackmore, VA and Laura Muse, Columbia, SC; brothers, Otis Lawson and wife, Mima, Gate City, VA, James "Babe" Lawson and wife, Sue, Ft. Blackmore, VA and Todd Lawson, Duffield, VA; step-children, Emma Penrod and husband, David, Coelle Quillin and wife, Bobbie, Billy Joe Quillin and wife, Gwen, Mike Quillin and wife, Rhonda, Larry Quillin and wife, Linda, H.C. Quillin and wife, Gracie; special step-son, Dwight Quillin and wife, Jennifer; special step grandson, Richard Quillin and wife, Ginger; special niece, Shirley Thacker; several step grandchildren and great grandchildren; lots of nieces, nephews, and a great abundance of friends, with special friends, Mima Lawson, Faye May, and Judy Stallard.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m., Thursday, August 6, 2009 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Wrightly Salling, and the Rev. David Penrod officiating.

Graveside services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 7, 2009 at the Lawson Cemetery, Ft. Blackmore, VA. Chris Hill, Matt Hill, Aaron Gillenwater, Anthony Lawson, David Williams, Tony Anderson, and Richard Quillin will serve as pallbearers.

The family would like to convey their special thanks to Delynn Lawson and Rosemary Sexton of Mountain Empire Home Health and to Barbara, Teresa, and Polly of Amedisys Home Health.

Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery for the graveside or to be at the Gate City Funeral Home by 9:00 a.m., to go in procession from the funeral home.
