US Congressman, Oklahoma Governor. He moved with his parents to Poteau, Indian Territory, in 1894, was self-educated and entered the mercantile business at the age of thirteen. He moved his mercantile business to Oklahoma, in 1910, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1915 and commenced to practice in Haworth, Oklahoma. He was postmaster at Haworth (1914-22), served in the Oklahoma State House of Representatives, (1922-26) and moved to Antlers Oklahoma, in 1929. There he was editor-owner, of the Antlers American, newspaper, (1929-50), a member of the Oklahoma State Senate, (1926-42) and Acting Oklahoma Governor in 1933. In 1943, he elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-eighth and Seventy-ninth Congresses, serving until 1947. Not a candidate for renomination, he resumed the newspaper publishing business until his death at age 58.
