She was the daughter of Robert Francis St Clair-Erskine, 4th Earl of Rosslyn (2 March 1833 – 6 September 1890) and Blanche Adeliza Fitzroy, and was the youngest of seven children. Her father died when she was only fourteen and she described him as "the great keynote and influence of my life".

She married Lieutenant-Colonel James Stewart Forbes, of Asloun, Aberdeenshire on 27 April 1896 and they divorced in 1906. She had two daughters - Marigold (26 Aug 1897-1975) and Flavia Forbes (18 Dec 1902-13 Oct 1959).
