Pvt. Joseph L. Wisniowski was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1941. He was assigned to B Company, 192nd Tank Battalion. The company had been an Illinois National Guard Tank Company.
In November 1941, Joe and the other members of the battalion arrived in the Philippine Islands. On December 8, 1941, December 7th in the United States, he lived through the Japanese attack on Clark Airfield. For the next four months he fought to slow the Japanese conquest of the Philippines.
On April 9, 1942, Wisniowski became a Prisoner of War when Bataan was surrendered to the Japanese. He took part in what has become known as the Bataan Death March and was held as a POW at Camp O'Donnell and Cabanatuan POW camps.
He became ill at Cabanatuan and died of malaria and dysentery.
