Eugene Hayes Collier attended school in Flora, Miss, until he decided to leave home, at the age of 16. During the years that followed, he worked in a mine, on a ranch, on a railroad and for the Cushman Motor Co. in Lincoln, Neb. He also farmed, clerked in stores, later operating his own grocery store in Huntsville and Beaumont, Tex. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Baptist Church. He liked to fish, play 42 and Canasta, read and work crossword puzzles. He enjoyed visiting friends and relatives. He read history and kept up with current events.
