Francis Marion Bennett III, commonly called "Marion", was born on July 15, 1911 in Savannah, Georgia. He was the eldest son of Francis Marion Bennett II and Harriet Elizabeth Dean Bennett. His father was a railroad conductor, and his mother was a homemaker. He lived most of his early life in Arcadia, Florida. On Feb. 23, 1936 he married Bertha Elizabeth Hall. They had five children: Francis Marion IV, David Alan, Marilyn Kay, Sandra Lee, and Judith Courtney Bennett. He passed away on April 28, 1965 in The Presidio Army Hospital, San Francisco, California. He is buried beside his wife, Bertha Elizabeth Hall Bennett and his younger brother, Charles William Bennett.
