George's parents were Alfred Clark and Nancy (nee Douglas) Brush.

George de Forest Brush was born in Shelbyville, Tennessee on September 28, 1855, to Alfred Clark and Nancy (Douglas) Brush, The middle name, de Forest, was from his grandmother Elizabeth de Forest. George had an older brother Alfred and a younger sister Lillie. His early education mostly came from his mother, Nancy, daughter of Alexander and Lydia (Treby) Douglas. As an amateur artist herself, Nancy taught and encouraged George to paint.
At 16 he studied at the National Academy of Design and at age 19 studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, France with Jean Leon Gerome.
George traveled west with his brother Alfred to Wyoming & Montana. There he painted the Native Americans, Shoshone, Arapaho, & Crow tribes on their reservations.
In 1885 he rented a farm in Cornish, New Hampshire. There he met his future wife, Mary Taylor (Mittie) Whelpley and on January 11, 1886 they eloped.
Together they had 8 children:
Alfred who died of diphtheria at 8 months,
Georgia, who died of diphtheria at 13 years old,
Gerome, Nancy Douglas, Tribbie, Mary, Jane, and Thea de Forest.

George made many trips to France and Italy and sometimes moving to France with his family for years.
George purchased a farm in Dublin, NH in 1901
In 1937, his studio was destroyed by a fire and many of his paintings were lost,
George de Forest Brush died on April 24, 1941 and is buried at Dublin Town Cemetery
