Adams county’s oldest resident and oldest Civil War veteran, Adam Franklin Bucher, died this morning at 7:00 at the home of a son, Edward J Bucher, Cashtown.
He was 98 years, 7 months and 26 days old.
Although he had been in ill health for three years, Mr. Bucher became critically ill only two weeks ago. Death was caused by the infirmities of age.
Born of pioneer parentage in Butler township a son of the late Christian and Martha (Walter) Bucher, Mr. Bucher always resided in Adams county.
Mr. Bucher, one of the last members of Corporal Skelly G.A.R. post, No. 9, of Gettysburg, enlisted October 16, 1862, in Co D, 165th regiment, Pennsylvania volunteer infantry, and was honorably discharged July 28, 1863. During the battle of Gettysburg Mr. Bucher’s regiment was engaged in the south.
A stonemason in his young days Mr. Bucher helped to rebuild Chambersburg after it was burned by the Confederates in 1863. Later he turned his efforts to farming. For 17 winters during the seventies and eighties, he hauled lime by team between Cashtown and Chambersburg.
For a number of years he was constable in Franklin township.
His wife whose maiden name was Miss Susan Settle, died a number of years ago.
Mr. Bucher was a member of Flohr’s Lutheran church.
Surviving are three sons, G.M. Bucher, Edward J Bucher and Harry A Bucher all of Cashtown, 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Brief funeral services at the home of Edward J Bucher Saturday afternoon at 1:30 with further services at 2:00 at Flohr’s Lutheran church. Dr. Harvey D Hoover a member of the faculty at the Lutheran theological seminary here, officiating. A military burial will be accorded the veteran in Flohr’s church cemetery.

The son of Christian & Martha (Walter) Bucher, in 1860 he lived with and/or worked for master carpenter George Settle in Franklin Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 11" tall and had auburn hair and blue eyes. He married Susan E. Settle and fathered George Brinton McClellan (b. 06/08/63), Edward Jacob (b. 08/14/68), Harry Alexander (b. 08/29/70), and Charles A. (b./d. 08/18/78).

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 6 as a private with Co. D, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company June 28, 1863, in Gettysburg.

He claimed his carpentry skills came in handy in the rebuilding of immolated Chambersburg. In 1890, he lived in Marysville, Perry County, but returned to Franklin Township, Adams County. Susan died in 1900, and he married widow Anna Matilda Biesecker, née Shull. Cause of his death is listed as "chronic endocarditis" with "infirmities due to advanced age" a contributing factor.
