Norman Earl Shumway passed away peacefully at the age of 79 on October 15, 2000 in American Fork, Utah. He was born April 27, 1921 in Sunnyside, Utah, to Lewis Earl and Leona May Gagon Shumway. He married Norma Allridge in Elko, Nevada on October 11, 1941. Their marriage was solemnized in the Manti, Utah Temple on July 2, 1942. They recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.
Norman moved from Sunnyside to Price, Utah where he met his sweetheart, Norma. Following their marriage they lived in Elko, Nevada for a short time until Norm served his country for two-and-one-half years in WWII in the South Pacific. Following the war they moved to American Fork where they have resided for 54 years.
During his work life he was a plumbing and heating contractor, the building engineer when the Provo LDS Temple was built and retired from Geneva Steel in 1983.
His hobbies were building homes, watching BYU and Jazz games, making willow whistles for his grandchildren and going on family vacations. He was an excellent craftsman. He loved his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He always had a great concern and devotion for his wife, his parents and each member of his family.
He was a member of the LDS Church where he served in many capacities, including Bishop, Bishops Counselor, Stake Missionary, High Priest group leader and Stake High Council. He and Norma also worked in the Provo Temple for eight years. He served in city government as a city councilman for several terms.
He is survived by three sons and two daughters: Larry Earl (Jeri) of Logan, Utah, Janice Davenport (Larry), Lynette Barrington (Ken), Michael Dean (Janet) of American Fork and Scott Allridge (Jody) of Highland, Utah and Geoffrey Lighten (Jill) of Alpine, Utah; 27 grandchildren and 13 greatgrandchildren; a sister, Leona Lewis (Russell) of Provo and Ardis Brady (Ed) of West Jordan, Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, William R. and a sister, Joann.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 18, at 11:00 a.m. in the American Fork Fifth Ward, 3S1 South 300 East. Friends may call at the church from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the services. Interment will be in the American Fork cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by VFW, District IV. The family would like to thank Vista Care of Utah for their care and kindness.
