Theresa M. (Hyland) Vitale, age 69, of Wilmington, formerly of Chelsea, died Thursday, September 13, 2007, surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with cancer for 17 years.

Theresa was born to Irish immigrants Thomas and Kathleen (O'Brien) Hyland, on July 1, 1938, in Cheslea, MA. She grew up in Chelsea and graduated from Chelsea High School in 1956. Following High School, she met, through a mutual friend, a marine named James F. Vitale, they married soon after and celebrated over 50 years together. She was the love of his life. They moved to Wilmington in the 1960's and together they raised four beautiful daughters.

Theresa was a shy and gentle woman who was a beloved wife, devoted mother, loving grandmother and great-grandmother, dear sister, aunt, and a loyal friend. Though a woman of few words she displayed her kindness, generosity and grace through opening her home with warmth that made everyone who entered feel welcome. She was a gourmet cook and made every holiday special to her family and friends. She enjoyed ceramics, loved to play cards, go to Foxwoods & Vegas and shop with friends. Theresa was very strong in her Catholic Religion, she loved to attend St. Thomas Church. Theresa's unfailing faith carried her through the difficult bouts with cancer over the years. She was truly a special woman and will be greatly missed by many.

Theresa is survived by her beloved husband James F. Vitale of Wilmington, her daughters Terry Walden & her husband Jay of Bradford, Debbie Cleary & her husband John of Peabody, Jackie Vets & her husband John of Haverhill, Jami Legere & her husband Michael of Wilton, NY, she was the loving grandmother of James, Christopher, Andrew, Maxwell, Samantha, John, Sydney, Brent, Erin, and great-grandson Brady, dear sister of Kathy Flett of Malden, and she is also survived by many brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces & nephews.

Her Funeral was held from the Nichols Funeral Home, Inc., 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington on Tuesday, September 18th at 11:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Thomas Church and was celebrated by Fr. Philip Earley. Interment took place in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington. Memorial donations in Theresa's name may be made to the Jimmy Fund, 1 Harvard St., Brookline, MA 02146.
