Eli was the son of William Taylor and Melina Smith. Melina left her husband in England after the death of their son, William.

Eli traveled with his mother and two brothers (Heber and Edwin) from England to Utah. His brothers died soon after reaching Utah. His mother married James Hepworth who helped raise Eli.
