He was the fifth of nine children born to Noah Slay and Nancy Cruse, both natives of South Carolina.

On December 19, 1862, at age nineteen, he joined the Fifteenth Arkansas Confederate Infantry. He fought in the battles of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. He was taken prisoner, retained for seven months and sixteen days at Camp Butler, Illinois. He returned to his command at Jackson, Mississippi. Again taken prisoner at Port Hudson, but paroled, and then joining the Sixth Louisiana Cavalry, serving until the end of war.

After the war he accumulated 1,050 acres of land.



~In 1850, Stephen and family were living in Merrietts, Cobb, Georgia.

~In 1900, Stephen and wife were living in Sulphur, Miller, Arkansas.
