ADOLPH "OTTIE" SCHLOTFELDT, Eldest son of THEODORE DETLEF SCHLOTFELDT and ALVINA RASCHE SCHLOTFELDT of Gambril, Scott County, Iowa.
Raised in the rural area near McCausland, Ottie grew up working the farm and became an accomplished carpenter doing home and barn building in support of his father and also with cousins in DeWitt. After returning from duty in France in World War I, Ottie learned the art of building row boats. This fit his fondness for fishing in the Wapsi River nearby the family home. Nephew, Fay Ernest, also recalls that Ottie also raised his own tobacco and stored the bundles to dry on the hay floor of the barn.
Ottie never married and lived for many years in the family home after his father died of influenza in 1919, the year Ottie was discharged. He was there until after Alvina's death in 1942.
Always pleasant and friendly with everyone, he spent his last years with a room at the Wapsi Inn. He has been missed by many.
The Arsenal Cemetery records his service as a Pvt. with Co. E, 313th Ammunition Train, 88th Division, US Army.
He was entertaining with his stories about dealing with the Mules that supplied the forces in France. The experiences were both of the funny and the hazardous. See the pictures he gave his sister, Leone Schlotfeldt Kruse, and are posted here by his nephew Fay in 2011.
Ottie's helmut and Military Records along with these photos were donated to the Fountain Hills, Arizona Veterans of Foreign Wars in 2010 by Fay for whatever use they wanted. In 1989, the year of his mother's death, Fay had donated Ottie's WWI Gas Mask that Ottie gave to him, along with his own mask from the Korean War, to a Marine being transferred from Des Moines to the Marine Museum in Washington, D.C.
