While vacationing in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Phillip Stonebrook, 66, of Joseph, Oregon fell out of the kayak he was in on the Chattahoochee River near Roswell, Georgia. Another man who was also in the kayak was able to make it out of the water on his own. Dr. Stonebrook's body was found 60 feet away from where he was believed to have gone into the water.

Philip Ray Stonebrook, M.D., was born on December 7, 1943 in Lindsay, California to Earl and Gertrude Stonebrook.

Philip died on April 13, 2011, in a kayaking accident while visiting a friend in Atlanta, Georgia.

Philip was raised on a farm in Independence and graduated top of his 1962 Central High School class where he was also student body president. He went on to attend University of Oregon School of Medicine in the top 10 percent of his class. Philip was a Captain in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He served his residency at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas.

In 1972 he settled in Ashland, Oregon to begin his 27-year family medical practice. During those years he not only delivered over 1,000 babies over several generations, but had hundreds of patients who he cared deeply about. Philip was a doctor ahead of his time, always on the cutting edge of health and nutrition for his patients. He was a well-respected doctor, citizen and friend to all in Ashland.

Philip married Fran Watson in 1966 and they had two children, Darren and Joey.

He was briefly married in 1980 to Mary Stinson.

In 1985, Philip married Jody Thomas in Ashland, Oregon. Philip and Jody retired in 1999 and moved to Joseph, Oregon, where they hosted many friends who came to enjoy the numerous outdoor activities in the area, Wallowa Lake and the surrounding mountains. Philip and Jody have been married over 25 years.

Philip piloted his own plane and was an accomplished hang glider. Philip was knowledgeable about rocks, minerals, and gems, and sold many original design pieces of jewelry in Joseph. He designed and made many one-of-kind pieces of jewelry for friends and family. He loved gardening, mushrooming, fly fishing, hiking, snorkeling, clamming, and had a great affection for all animals and the outdoors. Philip was also a talented musician and loved jazz.

Philip and Jody traveled to Bali, Thailand, China, Egypt, Zimbabwe, Tahiti and the Cook Islands.

Surviving family members are his wife, Jody; his son, Darren Stonebrook of Salem, daughter, Joey (Will) Semolke and grandson, Cole of Gates, Oregon. Other surviving family members are his stepdaughter, Danica (John) Curtright of Anchorage and their three children, Devon, Aaron and Cameron. He is also survived by his brother, Bob (Chris) Stonebrook of Grants Pass, Oregon, and his sister, Esther (Mel) Ediger of Dallas, Oregon. He has many nieces and nephews that survive as well as numerous close friends that will mourn his passing. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Beverly.
