Business Magnate, Philanthropist. Elmer Pierson and his brother John founded the Vendo Company. After World War II the vending machine was still a fairly new concept, and Vendo was the largest manufacturer of vending machines in the world. He made donations for the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art's sculpture garden, $250,000 for Pierson Hall at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. He also established the John B. Gage Lecture and Fellowship Fund, in honor of the Kansas City, Missouri "clean-up" mayor, who was responsible for cleaning up after the Pendergast era politics.
