Dubbed the "Clean up Mayor", John Gage was a 3 term Mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, from 1940-1946. His task was to clean up the remnants of "the dirty thirties" and the corruption of town boss Tom Pendergast. He hired City Manager L.P. Cookingham. Together they brought in the charter amendments for a real merit system (exams for all city employees). And they instituted fair, honest government with no monkey business. Still working at age 82, he was struck by a motorist while crossing 11th and Grand Avenue, on his way to work. (Attorney)
