Arthur M. Allen, 76 of 7975 Middle Road, died January 7, 1995, at Rome Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born February 4, 1918, in Remsen, a son of Thomas and Elizabeth Allen. He was united in marriage to the former Janet T. Clarke on June 20, 1942, in Potsdam and enjoyed a marriage of 52 years. He was an Army veteran of WW II, serving in the Pacific, and was also called back in service for the Korean Conflict. Allen was a past commander and the current treasurer of Hughes Post American Legion #890 and a life member of the Remsen Memorial VFW Post #982. He also was a member of the Boonville Elks Lodge #2158 and an honorary member of the Remsen Volunteer Fire Dept.
He was formerly employed at Canada Dry Beverages, Utica, and was the former owner of the Remsen Hotel. He also drove bus for the Remsen Central School District and was a school traffic officer for the Rome Police Department.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Clarke Allen; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Donna and Lyle DeCarr, Sandra and Francis Grimshaw, Jo-Ann E. Jones and Carol J. Allen; and two sons and daughters-in-law, Arthur C. and Christine Allen, and Stephen T. and April Allen. Art is also survived by many brothers, sisters and special nieces and nephews, many good friends, and 11 beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was held January 10 at the Ackley-Barry Funeral Home, Main Street, Remsen, with the Rev. Virgil Versteeg officiating. Interment Fairchild Cemetery.
