U.S. Senator. He attended the Academy of Dover, studied law, was admitted to the Bar in 1835 and commenced to practice law in Dover, Delaware. He served as a member of the Delaware State House (1843-44, 1849-50) and was a member of the commission to revise the Delaware State Constitution in 1852. In 1856, he was appointed to the U.S. Senate, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John M. Clayton, serving until 1857. Choosing not to seek another term, he resumed his private legal practice in Dover, Delaware. He was appointed chief justice of the Delaware State Supreme Court in 1876 and served until just before his death at age 79.
