Walter died in the "Line Of Duty" in a Non-Battle related incident during the war. He was previously awarded the Air Medal and four Oak Leaf Clusters.
His remains were repatriated here from North Africa in May, 1948.

It was noted in his death announcement that he had applied for enlistment shortly after Pearl Harbor, but had been turned down for being married. After the military later amended that rule, he successfully submitted his enlistment.
