Mayor of Cincinnati. A native of Newark, New Jersey, Isaac Gouverneur Burnet moved to Cincinnati in 1804. An early member of the city's prominent Burnet family, he studied law, was admitted to the bar, and became a lawyer. When Cincinnati became incorporated as a city in 1819, Burnet was chosen as Mayor. Although he was disabled and physically weak, he was very popular as Mayor and served in that capacity until 1831. He was also the editor of a newspaper, the Liberty Hall. He died at his residence in Walnut Hills when he was 71 years old. He was buried at the 12th Street Presbyterian Grounds and was later removed to Spring Grove Cemetery. His father, William Burnet, was a member of the Continental Congress and Surgeon General of the United States during the Revolutionary War. His brother, Jacob Burnet, was a United States Senator. Another brother, David G. Burnet, was the first President of the Republic of Texas.
