US Congressman. Born in Bryan, Ohio, he was engaged in agricultural pursuits when the Civil War began. He enlisted in the Union Army in 1864 and served as a Private in Company H, 38th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, through the Atlanta campaign. After the war, he graduated from the law department of the University of Michigan, was admited to the bar in 1871 and commenced to practice law in Bryan, Ohio. He was elected as Williams County, Ohio, treasurer in 1871 and reelected in 1873. In 1887, he was elected as a Republican to the Fiftieth Congresses and reelected Fifty-first Congress, serving until 1891. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law in Bryan, Ohio, until his death at age 57.
